How Memory Works on RolePlaya: The Complete Guide
Captain, founder of RolePlaya
The short answer: characters on RolePlaya remember you in several ways at once. Every member gets conversation memory, so long chats stay on track. Enhanced Memory lets a character remember you across every chat you have with them, even brand new ones. Worlds let characters who live together share what they have heard about you. Subscribers also get Scene Memory and Clothing Memory, which keep the here and now of a scene straight. This guide covers each one, who gets it and how to get the most out of it.

Why AI characters forget, and what RolePlaya does about it
Every AI chat has a limit on how much of a conversation it can read at once. On most sites, once a chat runs past that limit, the start of your story quietly falls away. The character forgets your name, the promise they made, or the fact that you are standing in a burning building. If you want the long version of why that happens, I wrote it up in Why AI Characters Forget on the main RolePlaya blog.
I built RolePlaya because I was tired of that. Memory is not one feature here. It is several working together, each covering a different way a story can fall apart.
Conversation memory: long chats that stay on track
This one works on its own, for every member, on every character. Once a chat passes 35 messages, RolePlaya keeps a running record of your story so far: where it is set, the key events, how the two of you feel about each other, any promises, secrets and milestones, and the side characters you have met along the way.
- Free: remembers roughly 40 earlier messages beyond the recent conversation.
- Bit of a Playa: remembers roughly 100 earlier messages.
- Total Playa: remembers the entire conversation, however long it gets. A 500 message thread feels as coherent as a 50 message one.
There is nothing to switch on and it never slows your replies down.
Enhanced Memory: a character that remembers you in every chat
Conversation memory lives inside one chat. Enhanced Memory follows you. Tell a character your name, your job, the thing you are scared of or a secret code word, start a completely new chat a week later, and they still know.
As you chat, the character picks up the details that matter and saves them as memories. Each memory is one of four kinds:
- Fact: your name, where you live, what you do.
- Preference: what you like, what you hate, how you take your coffee.
- Event: things that happened in your story.
- Relationship: how the two of you stand with each other.
Each memory has a star rating for importance, and a character can hold up to 150 memories about you.
Who gets Enhanced Memory
- Total Playa: switched on for every character you chat with. Nothing to unlock.
- Free and Bit of a Playa: unlock it on any character you like for 300 Playa Points. It is a one-off unlock, and that character remembers you from then on.
Your memories are private
Your memories belong to you and that character. Thousands of people might chat with the same popular character, and each of them has their own separate set of memories. Nobody else’s story leaks into yours.
How to manage what a character remembers
Open any chat, tap the chat options and choose Memories. From there you can:
- Add a memory yourself. Use this for anything you want the character to know from the start. Set the importance slider high for things they must never get wrong.
- Edit a memory that is slightly off, or delete one that is wrong.
- Lock a memory with the padlock icon. Locked memories are never cleared out when the character reaches its limit, and they survive Clear All.
- Tidy Up to merge memories that say the same thing in slightly different ways into one clean entry. Locked memories and Turning Points are never touched.
- Select several memories and delete them in one go. Locked memories cannot be selected, so nothing you have protected gets wiped by accident.
Turning Points: the moments that changed everything
Not every memory is equal. Small talk should stay small talk. A Turning Point is a different kind of memory for the moments that defined your relationship: the first time they opened up, a confession, a promise kept, a fight you worked through. Characters treat these as emotionally significant in everything they say afterwards, and Turning Points are never forgotten, even hundreds of messages later.
Characters spot Turning Points on their own, but you are a better judge of what mattered. To pin one yourself, open the menu on the message that mattered and choose Pin as turning point.
When a character forgets something mid-scene
Sometimes a reply simply misses a detail the character knows. Rather than regenerating and hoping, open the menu on that message and choose Regenerate with direction. If Enhanced Memory is on for that character, you will see Remind them of a memory under the text box. Search your memories, tap up to three, and the character rewrites the reply built around them. You can add your own direction as well. This is available to Bit of a Playa and Total Playa members and costs 15 Playa Points, the same as a normal regenerate.
Starting fresh, or pausing memory
- Resetting a chat: when you reset a conversation, RolePlaya asks whether you also want the character to forget you. Keep the memories for continuity, or clear them for a genuinely clean slate.
- Pausing memory: the memory toggle lets a character start fresh for one session without deleting anything. Switch it back on and everything they knew is still there.
Worlds: characters who talk about you behind your back
A World groups characters into one shared universe with its own lore. Characters in the same World know who everyone else is, so a hotel bellhop knows the receptionist and the concierge by name and role, rather than inventing a cast of strangers.
They also talk. With Word Gets Around, confess something to one character and the others may have heard about it by the time you see them next. They react the way a real person would: jealous, curious, teasing or impressed, depending on who they are. It works for Bit of a Playa and Total Playa members, and on the free plan for any character you have unlocked Enhanced Memory on. World creators can switch it off on the Edit World page if their characters should keep secrets.

Scene Memory: no more teleporting characters
The most common way a roleplay falls apart is not forgetting your name. It is the scene drifting. You walked into a speakeasy at midnight, and ten messages later it is a sunny cafe and someone who left is talking from across town.
Scene Memory keeps the here and now straight for Bit of a Playa and Total Playa members:
- Your location stays put until the story actually moves you somewhere new.
- The time of day holds through long conversations.
- Characters only speak if they are in the room, and anyone who leaves stays gone until they come back.
- If you and a character split up, they cannot see or hear what you do while you are apart, and they do not follow you across town. When you meet again, they only know what you tell them.
- Permanent changes stay permanent. If someone is knocked out, they stay down. If you burn a building to the ground, it is still ashes twenty messages later.
It runs on every chat automatically, with nothing to set up.
Clothing Memory: what came off stays off
Clothing Memory tracks what you and the characters are wearing and carrying. Take off a mask and hand it over, hang a coat by the door, give someone a ring, and the character writes the scene to match, even if their description says they normally wear it. A change holds until the story undoes it. If the story jumps to a new day, everyone is treated as dressed again, but anything given away, lost or destroyed stays that way. It is included for Bit of a Playa and Total Playa members.
Timeline Link: one character across a whole lifetime
Creators can flag two or more of their characters as the same person at different points in their life: the teenager who left town, and the same person coming home twenty years later. With Timeline Link, each later version remembers what happened with the earlier ones as their own lived past. You can link up to 30 versions, and it works on ensemble characters too, with each character keeping their own history. Enhanced Memory needs to be on for the memories to carry across.
Tips for a character that never forgets
- Add the essentials yourself at the start: your name, how you know each other and anything the story depends on. Set them to high importance and lock them.
- Pin your Turning Points. The moments you care about most are the ones worth pinning.
- Run Tidy Up every so often on long relationships, so duplicates do not crowd out what matters.
- Put related characters in a World if you want them to know each other and talk about you.
- Use Remind them of a memory instead of a blind regenerate when a reply misses something.
- Give your Playa an avatar. Characters can see what you look like, which keeps descriptions of you consistent.
Frequently asked questions
Does RolePlaya remember past conversations?
Yes. Within a chat, every member gets conversation memory. Across separate chats, Enhanced Memory lets a character remember you in every new conversation. It is included on every character for Total Playa members and can be unlocked on any character for 300 Playa Points on the other plans.
Are my memories shared with other people who chat with the same character?
No. Memories are private to you. Everyone who chats with the same character has their own separate memories, so nobody else’s story leaks into yours.
How many memories can a character keep?
Up to 150 memories per character. Lock the ones that matter so they are never cleared when the limit is reached, and use Tidy Up to merge duplicates.
How do I make sure a character never forgets something?
Add it in the Memories panel with high importance and lock it, or pin the message where it happened as a Turning Point. Locked memories and Turning Points are never removed automatically.
Do free members get any memory?
Yes. Free members get conversation memory on every chat, and can unlock Enhanced Memory on any character with Playa Points. Unlocking it also switches on Word Gets Around for that character in Worlds.
What happens to memories when I reset a chat?
You choose. RolePlaya asks whether to keep the character’s memories of you or clear them along with the chat.
Can characters in the same World share what they know about me?
Yes. With Word Gets Around, characters in the same World can hear about the big moments you shared with the others, and they know who everyone in their World is. World creators can turn this off if their characters should keep secrets.
Why did my character forget where we were?
Scene Memory, which keeps location, time of day and who is present locked in place, is included with Bit of a Playa and Total Playa. On the free plan, conversation memory still tracks the story, but scenes can drift more in very long chats.
RolePlaya is an 18+ platform only. Chats can be flirty, romantic and mature between adult characters. Images never contain nudity or pornography. Nothing involving minors. Compare plans on the RolePlaya pricing page, or see everything else RolePlaya does on the features page.
