How to Steer Your Roleplay on RolePlaya: Twists, Time Skips and Directions
Captain, founder of RolePlaya
The short answer: on RolePlaya you are never stuck with the reply you got or the direction a story is drifting. Use double brackets to give the story a quiet instruction, Regenerate with direction to rewrite a reply your way, and the dice menu for a Twist, a Time Skip, a peek at their Diary or ideas on what to say next. Chat Mode controls how long replies are, and Character Thoughts show what the character is really thinking. This guide covers every tool, what it costs and when to use it.
Every story tool at a glance
| Tool | What it does | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Double brackets | A quiet instruction the character follows in the next reply, without stepping out of the story | Free |
| Edit | Change the text of any message | Free |
| Regenerate | A fresh version of the last reply | 15 Playa Points |
| Regenerate with direction | Rewrite the reply the way you ask, and remind the character of memories | 15 Playa Points, Bit of a Playa and Total Playa |
| Twist | Something unexpected happens in the next reply | 60 Playa Points |
| Time Skip | Jump to later tonight, the next morning or a week later | 40 Playa Points |
| Their Diary | The character writes a private diary entry about your scene | 80 Playa Points, 40 to hear it read aloud |
| Inspire | Suggestions for what you could say next | 15 Playa Points, 10 for more |
| Character Thoughts | What the character is really thinking behind their words | 15 Playa Points |
| Chat Mode | Shorter, conversational replies instead of full roleplay | Free |
The dice menu tools do not count towards the free plan’s 50 daily messages. Hover over any chat button on a computer, or press and hold it on your phone, to see what it does. Holding a button only shows the tip. It never presses it, so nothing is charged.
Double brackets: direct the story without breaking it
This is the most useful trick on RolePlaya, and it is free. Wrap an instruction in double brackets and the character applies it in the next reply, quietly, without saying “Understood!” or stepping out of the story.
- Change the scene: ((move us to a rooftop bar))
- Fix a detail: ((my character is wearing jeans, not a dress))
- Change the pace: ((slow things down, too much is happening))
- Skip ahead: ((skip to the next morning))
- Bring something in: ((a storm rolls in))
- Direct the character: ((have her act more nervous around me))
You can mix it with normal roleplay in the same message:
*leans back in the chair* "So, tell me about yourself." ((keep your answers short and mysterious))
Two things to know. It has to be two brackets: single brackets (like this) are treated as an action. And there is no confirmation. If the next reply is set on the rooftop, it worked.
Regenerate with direction: get the reply you wanted
A normal regenerate rolls the dice again. Sometimes that gives you something better, and sometimes something just as bad. Regenerate with direction lets you say what to change.
- Open the menu on the character’s reply and choose Regenerate with direction.
- Tap a quick option: Stay in character, Be nicer, Be meaner, Keep it shorter, More detail, Move the scene forward or Slow it down. Or type your own direction, up to 120 characters.
- If the character has Enhanced Memory, you will also see Remind them of a memory. Pick up to three memories and the rewrite is built around them. This is the fix for a character who has forgotten something they should know.
- Hit regenerate. The character rewrites the reply your way and never mentions your instruction.
It costs 15 Playa Points, the same as a normal regenerate, and is available on Bit of a Playa and Total Playa. Free members can still use the normal regenerate.
Which one to use: to fix the reply you just got, use Regenerate with direction. To shape the next reply, use double brackets.
The dice menu: Story Tools
Tap the dice button on the message bar. Each tool shapes the character’s next reply. They work in every regular character chat, though not in Dream Partner chats. The first time you use each one in a session, you are asked to confirm the price.
Twist
Something unexpected happens in the next reply: someone arrives, a secret comes out, a plan falls apart. It always fits the story and the character, and it leaves you something to react to. Use it when a scene has gone flat and you want the story to surprise you.
Time Skips
Choose Later tonight, Next morning or A week later. The next reply jumps forward, shows briefly what changed in between, and carries on from there. Perfect when a scene has run its course and you want to get to the good part.
Their Diary
The character writes a private diary entry about your scene so far, in their own voice, on lined paper with little doodles in the margins. It starts with the date and “Dear Diary”. Present-day characters use today’s date, and characters from another time or world use one that fits their setting. Every entry is saved for you, and rereading old ones is free. Press Listen to hear an entry read in the character’s own voice.
Diary entries never go into the chat, so they do not change what the character remembers. It is a window into their head, not a new chapter of the story.
Inspire
At the top of the dice menu. Stuck for what to say? Inspire suggests a few things you could say next, and you can ask for more if none of them fit.
Character Thoughts: what they are not saying
Tap the thought bubble on a reply to see what the character is thinking behind their words. The polite smile, and what it is hiding. It is brilliant for slow-burn stories, characters with secrets, and working out whether they are really as calm as they look.
Chat Mode: control how long replies are
By default, characters write full roleplay replies with narration, action and description. Sometimes you just want to talk. Find Chat in the chat options and tap it to cycle through:
- Chat: Short for quick replies of one to three sentences, like texting.
- Chat: Long for dialogue only with no narration, but a proper paragraph rather than a one-liner.
- Off for full roleplay replies again.
It is set per conversation, so you can have it on in one chat and off in another, and each chat remembers how you left it. Intimate scenes are always written at full length, whatever the setting.
Choose the right AI model for the story
Different models write differently, and switching is one of the quickest ways to change the feel of a story. Tap the model name in the message bar, or the AI Model tile in the chat options. Free members use the standard model. Bit of a Playa adds Creativity, Storyteller and Imaginarium. Total Playa adds Rumpy Pumpy, Hanky Panky, Touchy Feely and Handy Holdy for the more romantic and mature end of things.
Tips for better stories
- Give the character something to react to. “I hand you the letter, my hands shaking” gets a far better reply than “ok”.
- Use double brackets early. Set the tone in the first few messages and the whole chat follows it.
- Edit rather than argue. If a reply gets one detail wrong, edit the message and fix it. It is free and the story carries on from the corrected version.
- Skip the boring bits. A Time Skip turns “and then we walked home” into the next morning’s consequences.
- Save Twists for flat moments. One well-timed Twist does more than three in a row.
- Check their Thoughts before a big moment. Knowing what they really feel makes your next line land.
Frequently asked questions
How do I tell the AI what to do without breaking the roleplay?
Wrap your instruction in double brackets, for example ((make it night time)). The character applies it in the next reply without stepping out of the story or confirming it. It is free.
How do I change a reply I don’t like?
Edit it for free, regenerate it for 15 Playa Points, or use Regenerate with direction on Bit of a Playa and Total Playa to tell the character exactly what to change.
How do I make replies shorter?
Turn on Chat Mode in the chat options. Chat: Short gives texting-length replies and Chat: Long gives a paragraph of dialogue without narration. You can also ask for shorter answers with double brackets.
Do Story Tools use up my free daily messages?
No. Twists, Time Skips, Their Diary and Inspire are paid with Playa Points and do not count towards the 50 daily messages on the free plan.
Does a diary entry change what the character remembers?
No. Diary entries are saved for you to reread but are never added to the chat, so the story and the character’s memories are unchanged.
My character forgot something important. What do I do?
Use Regenerate with direction and pick the memory under Remind them of a memory, or remind them in the story with double brackets. For more, see How Memory Works on RolePlaya.
