How Do I Stop the AI Speaking for Me on RolePlaya?

Captain, founder of RolePlaya

The short answer: if a character keeps writing your lines or deciding what you do, tell them to stop with a double bracket instruction such as ((don’t speak or act for me)), edit out anything they wrote for you, and write your own actions clearly so there is nothing left for them to fill in. If you make characters, never write the user’s actions or words into your greeting.

Why it happens

AI characters are storytellers, and storytellers like to finish the scene. If your message leaves a gap, such as a question with no reaction from you or an action with no end, the character sometimes fills it by deciding what you say or do next. It is one of the most common complaints about AI roleplay on every site, and it is easy to steer away from.

How to stop it

  1. Give a direct instruction. Add ((don't speak or act for me)) to your next message. Anything in double brackets is followed quietly, without the character stepping out of the story.
  2. Edit the reply. Tap edit on the character’s message and delete the part where they spoke or acted for you. Editing is free, and the story carries on from the corrected version.
  3. Rewrite it your way. On Bit of a Playa and Total Playa, choose Regenerate with direction on the reply and type “Don’t speak or act for me”. The character rewrites it without mentioning your instruction.
  4. Close your own actions. “I hand her the letter and wait for her to read it” leaves nothing for the character to decide. “I hand her the letter” invites them to finish the moment for you.
  5. Set up your Playa. When a character knows exactly who you are from your Playa’s name and description, they are less likely to invent things for you.

For creators: write greetings that leave the user free

Characters copy their greeting. If your greeting says “You smile nervously and take her hand”, the character learns that it is allowed to act for the user, and keeps doing it. Write only what your character says and does, and end on something the user can respond to: a question, an offer or a moment that needs a reaction.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop an AI character speaking for me?

Add ((don’t speak or act for me)) to your message, edit out anything the character wrote for you, and finish your own actions so there is nothing left for the character to decide.

Does editing a reply cost anything?

No. Editing a message on RolePlaya is free, and the story continues from your edited version.

Why does a character keep acting for me?

Usually because the greeting or earlier replies included actions for the user, or because your messages left the moment open. Fix the greeting if it is your character, and close your own actions in your messages.
