Can I Roleplay in My Own Language on RolePlaya?

The short answer: yes. Characters on RolePlaya reply in your language automatically, based on your browser’s language setting, from the very first message, including narration and actions. Character intros and greetings are translated too, in more than 35 languages. You can also just write to a character in any language and they follow you. To keep everything in English, switch off Auto-Translate in your settings.

How it works

There is nothing to set up. If your browser is set to Spanish, French, German, Japanese or any other supported language, characters answer in that language from the start. If you write in a different language, or switch mid-story, the character follows you.

Automatic translation of intros and greetings

• Character intros and greetings are translated into your browser’s language, on the character’s profile page and at the top of a new chat.
• It works in more than 35 languages, including Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Turkish, Polish, Dutch, Swedish and Italian.
• It follows your browser’s language setting, not where you are.
• Character names are always kept exactly as the creator wrote them, and the tone of the roleplay is kept in the translation.

Turning translation off

If your browser is in your own language but you would rather roleplay in English, open your profile page, tap the settings cog and switch off Auto-Translate. Characters then reply in English and intros show in their original language. Buttons and menus are translated by your browser’s own translation, not by RolePlaya.

Tips for creators

• Write your intro and greeting in the language you write best. Readers get it translated, so quality matters more than language.
• Keep names, places and made-up words consistent. Names are never translated.
• A character can have a native language in their background. They still answer in the reader’s language, but can drop in a word or phrase from their own.
