How Do I Use Character Triggers and Game Indicators on RolePlaya?
Captain, founder of RolePlaya
The short answer: Character Triggers are hidden story moments that fire during a chat, such as a secret coming out after ten messages or jealousy the first time the user mentions an ex. Game Indicators are stats like Affection, Trust or Health that update as the story goes and show under each reply. Both are set up in the character editor, and you can check them with the Test Log in your own chats.
Character Triggers
Triggers are for Bit of a Playa and Total Playa creators, and everyone can chat with characters that use them. You can add up to ten per character.
- In the editor, scroll to Triggers, switch on Enable and tap + Add Trigger.
- Choose When: after a number of messages, or a specific moment you describe, such as “when the user flirts for the first time”.
- Write the hidden instruction, as a direction to the character: “You suddenly remember you left the oven on and start to panic.”
- Leave Repeat off for a one-time moment, or switch it on to fire every time.
The user never sees an instruction. The character simply reacts as if the moment happened naturally.
Tips for triggers that land
- Write directions, not narration. “Start flirting back harder” works better than “The character starts flirting back harder”.
- Be specific. “Become jealous and ask about the user’s ex” beats “change your mood”.
- Describe things that visibly happen in the chat. “When the user mentions their pet” works. “When the user feels sad inside” is too vague.
- Stack them. Set up a mystery at five messages and pay it off when the user asks about the past.
- The message count includes both your messages and the character’s, and one-time triggers reset in every new chat.
Game Indicators
Every creator can add Game Indicators. In the editor, switch on Game Indicators and add each stat with a name, a starting value, a minimum and a maximum, for example Health starting at 100, between 0 and 100. Two to four stats works best.
Then tell the character how the numbers move, in the background: “+1 Affection for kind words, +3 for heroic acts, -2 for betrayal” or “lose 10 Health per hit”. Readers see a bar under each reply with every stat and its value. Stats carry through a conversation and reset in a new chat.
If you write your own meter into the background, use this format so it is picked up: [INDICATORS:curse_band=X], with names in lowercase and underscores.
Testing them with the Test Log
- Open a New Chat with your character, so everything starts fresh.
- After each reply, open Test Log in the chat menu, next to Edit. Each trigger shows as Fired, Waiting, Not met or Already used, with a plain reason, and each indicator shows its value and how it changed.
- Adjust your triggers in the editor, then tap Reset test state to run the same chat again. Your messages are kept.
Only you can see the Test Log, and only on characters you made.
Frequently asked questions
How do Character Triggers work on RolePlaya?
You set a condition, either a message count or a described moment, and a hidden instruction. When the condition is met, the character acts on the instruction naturally without the user seeing it. Bit of a Playa and Total Playa creators can add up to ten per character.
How do I add stats like Affection or Health to a character?
Switch on Game Indicators in the character editor, add each stat with a starting value, minimum and maximum, and explain in the background how the numbers should change.
Why isn’t my trigger firing?
Check that Enable is still on after saving, that the message count includes both sides of the chat, and that described moments use simple, concrete language. One-time triggers fire once per chat, so start a new chat to test again. The Test Log shows exactly why each trigger did or did not fire.
