How Do I Hear Characters Speak on RolePlaya? Voices, Voicemail and Pillow Talk
Captain, founder of RolePlaya
The short answer: on Total Playa every character can speak. Tap the speaker icon on any reply to hear it in the character’s voice, or turn on Autoplay and every new reply plays by itself. On top of that, characters can whisper a reply to you, leave you a voicemail about your scene, talk you to sleep with Pillow Talk and read their diary aloud. Creators choose from 64 voices with accents from Glasgow to Tokyo, or describe a one-of-a-kind Signature Voice. This guide covers every voice feature, what it costs and how to get it.

How do I make characters talk out loud on RolePlaya?
Every character reply has a speaker icon. Tap it and the reply is read aloud in the character’s voice. To hear every reply without tapping, switch on Autoplay in the chat options. Hearing voices in chat is part of Total Playa.
- Only the dialogue is read. Actions and narration between asterisks are skipped, so you hear the character speak, not a narrator.
- Everyone in the scene has a voice. When other people speak in a reply, a barman, a rival, a friend, they speak in their own voices, and the same person always sounds the same.
- Your own lines are never read out in the character’s voice.
- One at a time. Tapping another reply stops the one playing, and a reply you have already heard replays instantly.
Which voice will my character have?
If the creator picked a voice, that is the one you hear. If they did not, RolePlaya matches one to the character from their personality, age and background. Either way you can choose a different voice for your own chats from Voice in the chat options.
What voices are there?
There are 64 voices, each with a preview button. Around 20 are accents: Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Cockney, Northern English, Southern American, New York, Texan, Australian, South African, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Russian, Jamaican, Indian, Japanese, Chinese and Korean.

How do I get my character to whisper?
On Total Playa, tap a reply from a character with a voice and choose Whisper It. The character says the same line again as a slow, breathy whisper, close to your ear, for 30 Playa Points. Replaying a whisper you already have is free.
How do I get a voicemail from my character?
Open Story Tools (the dice) in a chat and tap Voicemail. The character leaves you a 30 to 60 second message about your scene and how it made them feel, in their own voice, for 120 Playa Points. It stays in your chat to replay or download.
What is Pillow Talk?
Pillow Talk is the character talking softly with you for 2 to 3 minutes about the two of you, drawing on your story so far and winding down to a goodnight. Open Story Tools (the dice) and tap Pillow Talk. It costs 325 Playa Points and stays in your chat to play again or download.
Voicemails and Pillow Talk are never added to the conversation itself, so they do not change what happens next in the story or what the character remembers.
Voicemail and Pillow Talk work with your Dream Partner too. Open them from the Dream Partner panel in your chat, and your partner records them in their own voice.
Can characters read their diary to me?
Yes. Open Their Diary from Story Tools, go to an entry and press Listen to hear it in the character’s voice for 40 Playa Points. Every entry you have already paid for replays free. If the character has no voice yet, the voice picker opens first so you can choose one.
For creators: how do I give my character a voice?
On the create or edit character form, open the Character Voice menu, press preview on a few voices and pick the one that sounds like the character in your head. Any member can set a voice on their character.
What is a Signature Voice?
When none of the 64 voices is quite right, describe the voice instead. Under Character Voice, open the Signature Voice card, pick a base voice and describe it: age, accent, texture, pace and attitude, for example “gravelly, late 50s, Glaswegian, dry humour, slow and deliberate”. Press Preview as often as you like, then save it.
- It costs 500 Playa Points once and includes 3 free changes, then 100 Playa Points per change.
- Everyone who chats with the character hears it, and it shows as Creator customised.
- Name it and save it to My Voices to use on your other characters for 150 Playa Points instead of 500.
- Signature voices always sound like adults. Descriptions asking for a child or teen voice are refused.
Voice tips for better roleplay
- Put the words in quotes. Dialogue is what gets spoken, so characters who talk more sound more alive.
- Name the other people in your scene. Each named person keeps their own voice, which makes group scenes easy to follow by ear.
- Match the voice to the setting. An accent does more for a character’s background than a paragraph of description.
- Save the big moments. A Voicemail after a dramatic scene or Pillow Talk at the end of the night is a keepsake you can download.
