How Do I Stop a Character Going Out of Character on RolePlaya?
Captain, founder of RolePlaya
The short answer: when a character stops sounding like themselves, use Regenerate with direction and tap Stay in character, or add a reminder in double brackets such as ((stay true to her cold, sarcastic personality)). If it is your own character, the lasting fix is in the editor: a clear speech style, a few dialogue examples and a background that says how they behave, not just who they are.
Fixing it in the moment
- Regenerate with direction. On the reply, choose Regenerate with direction and tap Stay in character. Available on Bit of a Playa and Total Playa, for 15 Playa Points.
- A quiet reminder. Add ((remember, he never apologises and hates small talk)) to your next message. The character takes it on board without stepping out of the story.
- Edit the reply. Fix the line that felt wrong. Editing is free, and the character carries on from your version.
- Bring them back in the story. React the way someone would to a sudden change in personality. “Since when are you this nice to me?” often pulls a character back.
Fixing it for good, if you made the character
- Describe how they talk. Short sentences or long ones? Formal or slang? Do they swear, tease, ramble or go quiet when angry? Speech style is what keeps a character recognisable.
- Add dialogue examples. You can add up to ten example exchanges. Two or three good ones teach a character’s voice better than a page of description.
- Write behaviour, not just facts. “Grew up in Naples” tells the character where they are from. “Deflects every personal question with a joke” tells them how to act.
- Name the side characters. Use the Character Names field for anyone else in the story, so the main character never gets confused with them.
- Test under pressure. Insult them, flirt with them, ask awkward questions. The Arena is a brilliant way to see how a character holds up against someone else’s.
Characters from established TV, film, game and anime franchises already know their own story, history, relationships and habits. If a creator has given one their own twist, the creator’s version wins.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my AI character keep going out of character?
Usually because the character’s speech style and behaviour are not written clearly enough, or the conversation has pulled them in a new direction. Remind them with a double bracket instruction or Regenerate with direction, and strengthen the character’s description and dialogue examples.
How many dialogue examples can a character have?
Up to ten. Two or three well written examples are usually enough to set a character’s voice.
Do famous characters stay true to their source?
Yes. Characters from established franchises know their own story, relationships and habits. If the creator has changed something, the creator’s version wins.
