What Are Moods and Mood Faces on RolePlaya?
Captain, founder of RolePlaya
The short answer: Moods are small labels under each reply that tell you how the character is feeling, for example “Wednesday is happy”. Mood Faces go further: the character’s picture changes expression to match their mood. Mood labels are for Bit of a Playa and Total Playa members and are switched on from the Moods tile. Mood Faces work for everyone and can be turned off in Settings.
Mood labels
- Open the chat options and tap Moods to switch them on or off.
- Each reply then shows who is feeling what, such as “Monica is jealous”.
- They are for Bit of a Playa and Total Playa members using a paid AI model, and stay off until you turn them on.
- To set them for every chat, use the Moods toggle in Settings on your profile page.
They are brilliant for slow burns. You can see the moment a character goes from annoyed to curious to flustered.
Mood Faces
When a character’s mood changes, their picture changes expression to match, and a close-up of the new face pops up for a couple of seconds. Faces include loving, flirty, playful, flustered, curious, surprised, anxious, angry and sad. Calm moods show the character’s normal picture. Only the face changes. The background, outfit and pose stay the same.
- On a computer, the photo in the side panel changes. On a phone, the picture behind the chat changes.
- Characters whose face cannot be read, such as monsters, masks, heavily stylised art or characters facing away, keep their normal picture.
- To turn them off, open Settings in the chat menu and switch off Face Pop-ups. The character then keeps their normal picture.

Frequently asked questions
What are Moods on RolePlaya?
Labels under each reply that show how the character feels. Switch them on from the Moods tile in the chat options. They are available on Bit of a Playa and Total Playa.
Why does my character’s face keep changing?
That is Mood Faces. The character’s expression changes to match their mood. Switch off Face Pop-ups in Settings if you prefer their normal picture.
Does turning off Moods stop Mood Faces?
No. They are separate settings. Moods controls the labels and Face Pop-ups controls the faces.
