How Do I Make a Character With More Than One Person on RolePlaya?
Captain, founder of RolePlaya
The short answer: in the character editor, choose one of three setups. One Main Character is a single lead with optional side characters. Ensemble with Lead is a main character plus named co-leads who get equal speaking time. Pure Ensemble is several equal characters with no single lead. Name every person in the Character Names field so nobody gets confused or invented.
Which setup to choose
| Setup | Best for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| One Main Character | A single lead, with side characters in the background | A bartender, with regulars who come and go |
| Ensemble with Lead | A main character plus co-leads who deserve real speaking time | A rock star and her two bandmates |
| Pure Ensemble | A group of equals with no one in charge | Four housemates sharing a flat |
Stop characters being invented or confused
- Fill in Character Names with the main name and every side character. Characters only know who is in the story if you tell them.
- Give each person a line in the background: who they are, how they talk and how they feel about the reader.
- Keep names tidy. Real names, not labels. A side character called “Bartender 2” will be treated as someone actually called that.
- Give them different voices. If everyone talks the same way, readers cannot tell them apart and neither can the story.
Other ways to get several characters together
- Group chat. Put two or three separate characters in one chat, each with their own voice and picture, reacting to you and each other. Open to all members, from the Multi Playa tile on the homepage.
- Worlds. Separate characters who share a setting, know each other and hear about your time with the others. See the Worlds guide.
- Timeline Link. The same character at different points in their life, with later versions remembering earlier ones.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a character with more than one person on RolePlaya?
Choose Ensemble with Lead or Pure Ensemble in the character editor, and list every person in the Character Names field with a short description of each in the background.
Why does my character keep making up new people?
Usually because the cast is not named. Add every character to the Character Names field and describe them in the background.
Can I chat with several separate characters at once?
Yes. Group chat puts two or three characters in one conversation, and it is open to all members from the Multi Playa tile on the homepage.
