How Do I Fix the Point of View in a RolePlaya Chat?
Captain, founder of RolePlaya
The short answer: if a character switches between first, second and third person, or starts writing from the wrong character’s point of view, tell them which to use with a double bracket instruction such as ((write in first person as Mia, and never narrate my actions)), edit the reply that slipped, and use Regenerate with direction to rewrite it. Creators can stop it for good by writing the greeting in the point of view they want.
The three points of view
| Point of view | Looks like | Feels like |
|---|---|---|
| First person | *I lean against the bar* “You’re late.” | Close and personal |
| Third person | *She leans against the bar* “You’re late.” | Like reading a novel |
| Second person | *You walk in and she looks up* | Narrates you. Usually what people want to avoid |
Fixing it in your chat
- Say what you want. Add ((write in third person, only for your own character)) to your next message. Free, and the character follows it without stepping out of the story.
- Edit the slip. Rewrite the line that changed view. Characters copy earlier replies, so one corrected reply keeps the next ones on track.
- Rewrite it. Regenerate with direction on Bit of a Playa and Total Playa, with a direction such as “First person, don’t narrate me”.
- Write your messages the same way. If you write in first person, the character tends to mirror it.
When the story focuses on the wrong character
In stories with several characters, the spotlight can drift to a side character. Pull it back with ((focus on Mia, the others stay in the background)), or address the character you want by name in your message. If you are using a group chat, on a computer you can tap Talk to under a character in the side panel to speak to them directly.
For creators
- Write your greeting in the point of view you want. Characters copy it.
- Never narrate the reader in the greeting, such as “You walk in nervously”.
- For characters with more than one person in them, pick the right setup in the editor. See How Do I Make a Character With More Than One Person on RolePlaya?
Frequently asked questions
Why does my RolePlaya character switch to third person?
Characters often follow the point of view of the greeting and earlier replies. Tell them which to use in double brackets, and edit any reply that slips.
How do I stop a character narrating my actions?
Add ((never narrate my actions)) to your message, edit out anything written for you, and finish your own actions in your messages. See How Do I Stop the AI Speaking for Me on RolePlaya?
Can I choose first or third person?
Yes. Ask for it with a double bracket instruction at the start of the chat, and write your own messages the same way.
